"Here on Berkeley's campus we have a lot of laboratories where students get a wealth of in-person hands-on experiences. Kids also get to live in dorms and see what it's like to be a college student, which is just another way where they can see what life is like for someone who wants to go into medical school.

My advice would be don't be shy about your fascinations, about your interests. Let your parents know. Let your teachers know. If you have a vested interest in this or you're maybe thinking that this is something you want to do, this is exactly what these kinds of experiences are for. So that you get to have those in-person experiences that let you know this is something that I can see myself doing for the rest of my life."

"Students get exposure to the different areas of neuroscience and the different areas of research that can be done in neuroscience, in addition to just a basic introduction to what neuroscience is. The nice thing about this class is that all of the students are interested in neuroscience, and they chose it because they're curious about it. So I start with the basics. I give them a basic overview and then I invite speakers to come in, or I plan field trips to the labs of other professors on campus.

I cover a full range of neuroscience from memory to speech, we do a tour of the robotics lab, which has a lot of robotic exoskeletons for people with neurological injuries like stroke or spinal cord injury, and we do a lab on addiction models, we go to the sleep lab, biomechanics lab, where they study motion analysis for people with different neurological injuries. So they get a broad view of everything that goes on in the field of neuroscience."

"I'm teaching Criminal Justice Matters and Introduction here at Summer Discovery UT Austin. The program is a three-week immersion experience, where you get to come onto campus, take two courses, and also embed into the college life and experience some of Austin, make friends, and live in a dorm room. In a nutshell, you really get to experience what it's like to be a college student. 

Participating in this course specifically will benefit students because, beyond the topical content of the course, like, yes, it's about the criminal justice system in the United States. I think it's also designed to make you question the assumptions that you have, right?

My job is not to convince you what's right or wrong, but when you leave the class, you're no longer going to accept the law for what it is, you're no longer going to walk past a speeding sign and see it the same way. You're going to wonder, who constructed this, why is this a law, why is it 50, why is it, right, it's designed to get your critical thinking skills going, and I think that that will apply to whatever course you choose to take, and that's one of the fundamental things you need as a college student."
