Course Description

Embark on a learning journey where art meets algorithms and design meets data. This summer course uncovers the intersection between the visual creativity of graphic design and the logical structure of computer science, empowering students to become digital creators who can think both creatively and computationally. Through hands-on projects and interactive lessons, students will learn the fundamentals of design — color theory, typography, layout, and branding — while also building core programming skills using beginner-friendly languages like HTML/CSS and Python or JavaScript (depending on level). They'll explore how code drives interactivity and design in everything from websites and apps to video games and animations. Whether designing a personal logo, coding a mini website, or creating generative art with algorithms, students will leave with a portfolio of digital work and a deeper understanding of how graphic design and computer science intersect in today’s creative tech careers.

Example Projects & Activities:

Design Challenge Series: Create logos, posters, and digital layouts using Canva or Adobe Express while applying design principles.
Code Your First Website: Use HTML and CSS to build a personal portfolio site with custom graphics.
Intro to Generative Art: Use simple Python or JavaScript code to generate unique, repeating visual patterns.
UX Design Workshop: Design app interfaces with a focus on user experience and interactivity.
Creative Coding Game Jam: Team up to design and code a simple interactive game or animation.

Course Outcomes:

By the end of the program, students will:

Understand core principles of graphic design, including color theory, composition, and typography.
Gain introductory coding skills in HTML/CSS and basic scripting (e.g., Python or JavaScript).
Apply creative problem-solving to develop original digital designs and interactive content.
