Smart Stats: The Power of Data

Do you love numbers, patterns, and problem-solving? This course introduces students to the world of statistics through engaging activities, real-life data collection, and exciting experiments that show how numbers can help us understand and improve the world around us.

Students will explore key statistical concepts like mean, median, mode, range, probability, and data visualization. Through hands-on projects, they’ll collect their own data, organize it into charts and graphs, and use critical thinking to uncover patterns and draw conclusions. Whether analyzing favorite ice cream flavors, weather patterns, or results from a paper airplane experiment, students will discover that statistics is a powerful tool for making smart decisions.

Example Experiments & Activities:

• Candy Color Count: Collect and graph data from a bag of candy to explore probability and distribution.
• Paper Airplane Challenge: Fly different plane designs and analyze which flies farthest using averages and variability.
• Weather Tracker: Record daily temperatures and graph the data to find trends and compare climates.
• Survey the School: Design and conduct a mini survey, then organize and present the results.
• Dice and Spinner Games: Use fun games to explore probability and expected outcomes.
