Careers in Medicine

In this course, students will be introduced to a wide range of careers that may include pediatrics, family medicine, OB-GYN, nursing, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, dentistry, and research. Through a combination of in-class lectures, presentations, and discussions, students will take their learning outside the classroom and be armed with the information they need to make informed decisions about career options in medicine and health science. They will understand the level of coursework required for different specialties and the necessary steps it will take to cross the finish line (and potentially get those special letters after their names). Class topics will focus on current hot topics including medical ethics, health disparities, biomedical research, epidemics, health care costs, cancer research, genetic engineering, and health care reform. Learning Outcomes

Upon Completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Learn about a variety of medical careers, including doctors, nurses, surgeons, dentists, and researchers, to help them discover potential career paths.
2. Learn about the coursework, training, and steps needed to pursue different careers in medicine and health sciences.
3. Explore real-world issues like medical ethics, health disparities, epidemics, genetic engineering, and health care costs.
4. Through class discussions, and interactive activities, students will see how medical professionals work in real-life settings.
5. Have the knowledge to start planning their educational and career paths in medicine and health sciences.
