Course Description

This class is an introduction into the American legal system, the power of justice, and the importance of the rule of law. Engaging activities will expose students to legal analysis, negotiation, cross examination, research, and simulated and actual trials. From riveting courtroom dramas to decoding the Constitution, get ready for an adventure that will both educate and entertain. Learn basic legal concepts related to procedural law and improve your legal vocabulary while reviewing landmark cases and fascinating stories that have shaped the legal landscape. Students will develop critical-thinking skills as we review high-interest cases from today’s headlines and learn to understand the role of law in society, politics, and international relations. Students will have the opportunity to meet with law students as well as seasoned law professionals including trial attorneys, judges, professors, and the Dean of Admissions of Georgetown Law School. As an added bonus, students will have access to visit an on-going trial.

Learning Outcomes

Upon Completing this course, students will be able to:

Learn how the American legal system works, the importance of justice, and how laws impact everyday life.
Discuss landmark Supreme Court cases and real-world legal issues to understand their effects on society and government.
Strengthen your ability to analyze legal arguments, think critically, and debate different sides of a case.
Participate in mock trials, practice negotiation and cross-examination, and develop legal research skills.
Meet law students, attorneys, and judges, and visit a real courtroom to see a trial in action.
