Sociology

Through a combination of theoretical exploration, real-world examples, and sociological analysis, students will gain insight into the complex dynamics of human social behavior, from interpersonal dynamics to the complex social forces that shape these interactions. Topics will include childhood socialization, family structures and dynamics, gender roles and expectations, understanding deviant behavior (gangs, drugs, crime), race relations, population growth, sexuality and gender identification, and social movements. Students will have the opportunity to apply sociological theories to real-world situations and engage in critical discussions about contemporary social issues and change. Armed with your sociological imagination, you’ll never look at the world around you the same again.

Learning Outcomes

Upon Completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Explain how family, friends, and social media shape who we become, using real-life examples to show how our childhood experiences and family relationships influence our development.
2. Explore contemporary social issues such as deviant behavior, crime, drug use, and social movements, using sociological theories to understand their impact.
3. Discover how family life and early experiences influence how we develop and interact with others.
4. Explore how race, gender, and sexuality affect personal identity and how people connect with others in society.
5. Use sociological theories to analyze and discuss real-life situations and issues that impact your community and the world around you.
