Course Description
This course provides students with a practical introduction to the core ideas of finance and valuation. It is designed as a rigorous but accessible afternoon elective for motivated high school students who want to understand how firms are financed, how investors evaluate companies, and how the financial system allocates capital.
The course begins with the language of finance and a focused segment on how to read and interpret the three core financial statements. It then develops the tools needed for basic valuation, including financial ratios, time value of money, discounting, quoted loan rates, market multiples, and a simplified approach to intrinsic valuation. Adam Foley is an Adjunct Professor in at UBC Sauder and Senior Advisor to Deloitte LLP advising public and private companies on mergers and acquisitions, valuation, forensic accounting, and financial advisory matters. A CPA, CA, and CBV, he brings deep expertise in corporate finance, acquisitions, valuation, capital planning, and accounting. As Chief Financial Officer of VetCare Canada, he oversaw more than 35 acquisitions and raised $275 million in debt and equity financing, and previously served as a Director at Deloitte LLP,. Adam’s combination of university teaching and senior finance leadership makes him exceptionally well suited to guide students through the analytical demands of financial statements, valuation, investing, and the financial system with rigor, clarity, and practical relevance.
