Course Description
According to PitchBook’s 2025 rankings, UC Berkeley has the most venture-backed startups founded by undergraduate alumni, with 1,650 companies and 1,804 founders, making it the premier location to study entrepreneurship. The Global Social Entrepreneurship Academy is an immersive, hands-on program designed for high school students who want to understand how new social impact ventures are created, financed, and scaled in a global economy. The program introduces students to core concepts in innovation, venture capital, startup strategy, while emphasizing teamwork, creativity, cross-cultural communication, social impact, and critical perspectives.
The academy integrates structured instruction with interactive activities, special guests, team challenges, and a culminating Demo Day pitch event. Students work in teams to identify a meaningful problem in a developing country, design user-centered solutions, build a sustainable business model, consider social and environmental impact, and craft compelling narratives for customers and investors. The program is intentionally collaborative and social: students brainstorm, test ideas, iterate, and support one another in fast-paced, high-energy sessions intended to mirror the dynamic environment of a startup accelerator. Through workshops and feedback sessions with Berkeley undergraduate mentors, students gain a practical understanding of entrepreneurship and what it takes to bring an idea from concept to pitch.
