3D Design & Printing

Prototype, refine, and make your unique idea a design reality in one of UCLA’s newest Maker Space Labs! Individual and group projects provide students with opportunities to explore circuit and design prototyping, coding and physical computing, modeling and design software, 3D printing and scanning, fabrication, laser cutting, and etching. This course also includes a free three-year Fusion 360 license (3D modeling program).

*Supplemental course fee of $295 for lab and materials costs.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Work through the prototyping process by designing, iterating, and refining their unique ideas using a range of tools, including circuit and design prototyping, 3D printing, laser cutting, and etching.
2. Utilize industry-standard fabrication tools, such as Fusion 360, to create and manipulate 3D models, and apply these skills in real-world projects through physical computing and modeling.
3. Benefit from improved teamwork and communication skills gained by working collaboratively on group projects, while also pursuing individual projects that demonstrate their ability to independently execute design concepts.
4. Integrate coding and physical computing techniques into their designs, using software and hardware to create interactive, functional prototypes.
5. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to improve designs by refining prototypes, addressing technical issues, and incorporating feedback and testing results.
