Careers in Medicine

Do you like biology, thinking through complex problems and making the world a better place? Then a career in medicine might be a good choice for you! Through a combination of in-class lectures, presentations, discussions, and field trips, students will learn what actually happens when things go wrong in our bodies, and how doctors use science to diagnose and treat these issues. Lectures and labs will cover common diseases–including diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, kidney disease and meningitis- and give you the knowledge necessary to better understand what happens in the body when someone has these conditions. This course includes basic medical training with real medical equipment, such as learning to use a stethoscope, take blood pressure and suture a wound. In addition, students will become Red Cross certified CPR-providers. Students will learn about the (long!) pathway to becoming a doctor in the US, and will be given tips on how to improve their chances of success, starting with what to do in high school.

Field Trips may include visits to the UCLA research lab and the UCLA undergraduate anatomy lab.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop a basic understanding of the pathology of several common medical conditions.

2. Apply about the diagnostic process to real-world scenarios

3. Use standard medical equipment.

4. Understand the pathways to becoming a doctor in the United States for American citizens and for foreign nationals, including what to do in high school and college.

5. Identify different careers within the field of medicine, including medical

research.
