Course Description

In this course, students will be introduced to a wide range of careers that may include, but are not limited to, pediatrics, family medicine, OB-GYN, nursing, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, dentistry, and research. Through a combination of in-class lectures, presentations, discussions and, best of all - field trips, students will take their learning outside the classroom and be armed with the information they need to make informed decisions about career options in medicine and health science. They will understand the level of coursework required for different specialties and the necessary steps it will take to cross the finish line (and potentially get those special letters after their names). Class topics will focus on current hot topics including medical ethics, health disparities, biomedical research, epidemics, health care costs, cancer research, genetic engineering, and health care reform. This course will ignite your passion for a career in medicine.

Learning Outcomes

Evaluate the diverse range of medical and health science career paths, comparing the unique requirements, educational trajectories, and professional responsibilities across different specialties.
Analyze current critical issues in healthcare, including medical ethics, health disparities, biomedical research, and healthcare reform, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex healthcare landscape.
Investigate the educational and professional prerequisites for various medical careers, creating personalized roadmaps for pursuing specialized medical and health science professions.
Examine emerging medical technologies and research domains, such as genetic engineering, epidemiology, and cancer research, to understand the evolving nature of healthcare innovation.
Develop a critical perspective on healthcare challenges, integrating insights from field experiences, expert presentations, and in-depth discussions to inform future career decision-making.
