Course Description
What allows some people to stay optimistic and resilient in the face of challenges? How do positive experiences shape our emotions, relationships, and personal growth? What factors help us lead meaningful, fulfilling lives? In this two-week summer course, students will examine the field of positive developmental psychology—the scientific study of what enables individuals to flourish across different stages of life. Through readings, discussions, and interactive projects, participants will explore topics such as motivation, resilience, empathy, and wellbeing. Students will also learn how research in this field informs practical strategies for improving mental health and fostering positive communities. By the end of the program, students will develop a deeper understanding of the science behind human potential and the tools to apply this knowledge to their own growth and to the wellbeing of those around them.
*Supplemental course fee of $95 for a teen Mental Health First Aider training and certification.
As part of the course, students will earn their Mental Health First Aid Certification, gaining valuable skills to recognize and respond to mental health challenges in others.

Instructor Bio
Flor Castellanos Sanchez is a doctoral student in Counseling Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. As part of her program, she is currently working with children who have experienced complex trauma and behavioral challenges. Flor's clinical interests focus on trauma-informed approaches that support families in managing trauma-related symptoms within their communities and family units. Flor is also deeply passionate about research, with a specific interest in understanding mental health outcomes for immigrant communities in the U.S. She is dedicated to exploring ways to improve mental health support and access for underserved populations. In addition to her clinical and research pursuits, Flor has a strong enthusiasm for teaching. Since 2017, she has taught various psychology courses at UT Austin, serving both as a teaching assistant and lead instructor. She enjoys making psychology engaging and accessible to students of all backgrounds and is excited to inspire the next generation of learners.
